Because modern musicians started blending tango with everything from jazz to rock and techno, Neo-Tango split into several distinct sub-genres.
What it is: This is what most people picture when they hear "Neo-Tango." It blends acoustic bandoneón and strings with heavy electronic production, drum machines, house beats, trip-hop, and club loops.
Key ArtisTs: Gotan Project, Bajofondo, Tanghetto, Otros Aires.
What it is: Neo-Tango that relies entirely on acoustic instruments (violins, piano, bandoneón, guitar, cello) or jazz combos, but pushes the composition into modern jazz, folk, or contemporary classical realms without adding a single electronic synthesizer or drum loop.
Key Artists: Ariel Ramirez, Daniel Binelli, Federico Pereiro, or modern acoustic tango jazz ensembles.
(Note: This is very close to Tango Nuevo musically, but modern contemporary groups who write brand-new compositions today often fall under the broader modern/neo acoustic tag).
Help us discover, preserve and share the music that keeps tango alive.
