TANGO NUEVO - PLAYLIST

THE NEW SOUND OF ARGENTINE TANGO

Rooted in the traditions of Buenos Aires, Tango Nuevo took Argentine tango in bold new directions. Expanding its musical language through daring harmonies, shifting rhythms, new instrumental textures and influences from classical music and jazz, it challenged conventions and opened up new possibilities for the genre. From Astor Piazzolla's groundbreaking compositions to contemporary ensembles exploring new interpretations while remaining connected to tango's traditional roots, this is a genre in constant evolution.

ASTOR PIAZZOLLA

the revolution that refined tango

Astor Piazzolla transformed Argentine tango, taking its traditional roots into new musical territory. Drawing on classical music and jazz, he introduced innovative harmonies, rhythms and arrangements, creating a distinctive sound that became known as Tango Nuevo.

Libertango (Astor Piazzolla) – 1974 - Original Studio Recording.

New compositions capture Piazzolla's musical vision as powerfully as Libertango. Recorded in Milan in 1974, it became one of his most recognizable works and an emblem of the new direction he gave to tango.

piazzolLa's musical journey

"Libertango" was the culmination of a long musical journey — and a new chapter in Piazzolla's exploration of tango.

Consider the timeline:

1955 – Octeto Buenos Aires: Piazzolla begins challenging traditional tango orchestration, introducing more complex arrangements and instrumental interplay.
1960 – First Quinteto: He develops the distinctive sound of his quintet, combining tango traditions with classical and jazz influences.
1972 – Conjunto 9: His music becomes increasingly adventurous, with richer instrumentation and more elaborate compositions.
1974 – Libertango: In Milan, he records an entirely new sound, incorporating electric instruments, percussion and a more contemporary musical language.

Piazzolla was already an accomplished musician long before 1955. He had studied composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, who encouraged him to embrace tango as the foundation of his musical identity.

Libertango represents not a rejection of Argentine tango, but an expansion of what tango could become.
